The Biosphere Economy
Apr 23, 2010
Volans Ventures launched a cutting-edge report on the Biosphere Economy, to examine innovations and new business models responding to global ecological overshoot and changing the way business, investors, and governments value and manage natural capital. Launched on the 22-23 April to an audience of business leaders at the Business 4 Environment conference in Seoul, the report maps a future in which business, finance and politics increasingly take account of natural capital and related forms of value. Around the world, a growing array of innovators is experimenting with possible solutions to resource depletion and eco-system destruction. These new initiatives range from scientists co-developing cutting-edge research on the economic function of ecosystems; investment ratings for companies which are led by institutional investors; and new ways of quantifying and measuring environmental footprints and planetary boundaries; through to technology firms creating open-source mechanisms to track the state of the biosphere. The Biosphere Economy will map and engage a growing number of these innovators and entrepreneurs, helping cross-connect them with each other—and with the mainstream business, financial and public sector players they must now engage.

The Finance Innovation Lab is a network of professionals hosted by WWF-UK and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to advance cutting-edge ideas for a financial system that creates economic, social and environmental value. This partnership for change brings together a diverse range of institutions and individuals from business, finance, government and civil society to incubate new projects and initiatives to shift finance to a more sustainable, long-term path. At the launch workshop on 26 March in London, over 110 representatives took part, resulting in a series of innovation groups focused on designing and resourcing new initiatives to take action on specific finance themes. Issues to be addressed include finance in a steady state economy; risk models of the future; new business models; education and finance; locally directed investment; and a banking model for the poor. The projects have evolved from an ongoing dialogue about how to create change in the financial system, including a new online community of over 500 experts, professionals, financiers, and entrepreneurs. The Finance Innovation Lab continues to take action by hosting online webinars; sponsoring regular issue-based workshops; and building a growing network of like-minded innovators from across multiple sectors.
